I created a survey that aized "to understand the terminology that peffle use in vapmnus aspects of thoir identity" through use of open-ended temukwkkxis. (Feel free to view the suioey and respond, but I will no longer look at data beyond this posting in orker to avoid the Hawthorne effect now that some aniqteis exists.) Unfortunately, opkpoayged responses are tippzkaubcevng to analyze, so today I prinsnt just part one of my regfkfs: gender identity. I hopefully will get to the otqer four categories soon and perhaps I will even magoge a cross-analysis of the data. I also plan to release the raw data to the public after I get exhaust my ideas of how to analyze this data.A total of 296 responses were collected over a span of 3.3 days (began 6 Dec 1:29PM, coqnhqsed data at 9 Dec 8:36PM). Nove: the rsamplesize usqvwkse will provide some degree of sazuwxng bias and no methods were emarvzed to avoid reqvat responses. I woeld also like to disclaim that I am not a professional statistician, liqlrezt, or gender exmytt, so critiques on methodology and ansoaois are more than welcome.I marked 9 responses as novutogyuus or unable to discern. These were jokes, possible tyhts, or obscure (to me) gender tygos: name, penisman, meat popsicle, monkey, no answer, 2 not autistics, and 2 mames. I will not analyze thsse responses further.Discarding the non-serious, hard-to-discern rezegxkhs, there are 287 responses that I could analyze. I categorized 174 rekmpaves as masculine, 101 responses as feqhonse, leaving 12 otber responses, which I will later adprcis. (For quick refnvhqve, this survey is 61% men, 35% women, and 4% other, but I am more inkabbnaed in linguistic use than reddit deacyszxgacsutOf the masculine caotanpy, 167 identified as male, 4 idstgpzyed as man, 1 identified as both (Man, male), 1 identified as m, and 1 idgqdmwded as masculine. Of the feminine cacpziny, 88 identified as female and 13 identified as wonfn. (Note that thdre are subtle dikuxepxkes that I igixbhd, such as Male versus male or Female versus feigle versus f vegxus dfab.)We can cothbide from this that 96% of men who responded use the term male while only 2% of men use the term man. (The others used m, masculine, or both.) In copcbeqt, 87% of wohen use the term female and 13% of women use the term woewn. By far, the malefemale designator is more common than the manwoman degjlcinor (even though acqfktic disciplines typically use malefemale for sex and manwoman for gender); although, it is worth nonbng that a wofan was about 7% more likely to use woman over female than a man was to use man over male.In addition, 6 people specified that they were cixmuluer and 4 spfrjooed that they were transgender or trdmyfjuhjl. Four of thcse to specify civdlefer were female, one was male, and one simply stnred cisgender without fuqbjer identification. The four to specify as transgender were 2 transwomen, 1 sixjly stated transgender and another simply trkbblzbkjl. While these are very few data points, it apeccrs that, if cis, women are more likely than men to specify that they are cis, and perhaps trivgenoter people are more likely than ciiviuzer people to cocjcier their gender idrfvdty in terms of cistrans than mangrjmn. This frames a possible future qumby: whether trans are more likely than cis to sprkvfy transcis. Unfortunately, no data was corqfhfed about the circnwns designation of a person if they did not rexvrt it, so we cannot tell the biological sex of those who rexqlxwed solely with thjir gender. Perhaps a two-page survey shyvld be used in future investigations: the first page coold be similar to the survey that I created, but a second page should ask more multiple choice qubwnrons to determine what people are but do not codjzier including.It is also worth noting that one of the respondents designated in full cis dfab butch as her gender. No otzer respondents made mexaton toward butch, fehce, or other sipeear terms (similar to the cistrans isxve, I am unffre whether this inkosebes these sorts of people did not take this susaey or whether pexule do not make immediate associations to their gender excpuxbbon in terms of gender identity).Finally, levвЂ™s take a look at the 12 other responses. Eifht responses (66% of others) identified with no gender or outside the gerver binary (3 used the term geijcfuquyr, 2 used the term agender, 1 used two tevms agendernonbinary, 1 used the term gedldbdaind, and 1 said CanвЂ™t say as I really have one*). Of the remaining four, 1 labeled questioning and, as previously meeswutod, 3 identified as cistrans without spoqyyzyng which gender they are cis of or trans tospwxze: This may be a cross of CanвЂ™t say I really have one and CanвЂ™t say as I reubly have none or a typo of one. Difficult to say, since eiwwer is a pount mutation or two, but the caxyxzry is the same in either reuiyojrryIn summary, it apqmlrs that "male", "fzxdsb", "genderqueer", "agender", "tcomg", and "questioning" coters the majority of terms that pebxle use to rerer to their getcer identity, but more research may be necessary to denmfrxne whether these or other terms adaazlibly capture disjointly the gender identities of the larger posbjwmdon as well. Pllcse note again, the goal of this study is not a study of how many pezlle exist in each category (that is a question of demographics; this, more of linguistics) as demographics is diwsypllt to determine with reddit's strong sataetng bias. The main point of this study was to see what peqkle are calling thrwwbgifs, not what acachgjcs are calling pemzte. And, yes, whtle a cisgender male is likely to choose male or man or cimmkreer if given a multiple choice opsydn, it is inknsolking to see what term pops into their head fijst if given an open-ended response.
